Description

Heinrich Fiehn Tunable Ocarina

Heinrich Fiehn Tunable Ocarina in good condition. This antique clay ocarina was made in Vienna by Heinrich Feihn and company. Despite its deceptively simple, sculpted, organic ceramic form, features some clever internal technology. Inside the ocarina’s chamber is a cylinder tube attached to an outside pin. When the pin is pulled out, the pitch is flattened by about a half-step, allowing the ocarina to be easily tuned.

Fiehn first won an award for ocarina design in Linz, Austria, and then another at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. Winning the latter award singled Fiehn out as one of the top ocarina makers, and his business started to boom. Fiehn made ocarinas in all sizes and keys, including a contrabass. After Fiehn passed away in 1920 in Vienna, his company survived for few years longer, managed by his widow.
