William Vacchiano joined the New York Philharmonic in 1935 and was appointed principal trumpet in 1942 by Bruno Walter and retired in 1973. He taught the trumpet for many years, most famously at the Julliard School, and his pupils included Wynton Marsalis, Gerard Schwarz and Miles Davis.
