A player who held principal positions in Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1928–1933) and Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1933–1939), Eldon Benge started building his own trumpets based on his personal French Besson – the most popular orchestral trumpet of the time. During the development of his trumpets Eldon Benge worked with Renold Schilke and Zig Kanstul as well as many players who regarded these trumpets as the best available.
Benge charged location and ownership several times during its existence:
- Owned and operated by Eldon Benge in Chicago IL 1937-53; *BURBANK CA 1953-70
- Sold to Leisure Time Industries and moved to Los Angeles CA 1970-72
- Bought by King Musical Instruments, moved to Anaheim CA 1972-83 (production increased)
- Moved to Eastlake OH, 1983 – 2005 (end of production). King along with Conn became United Musical Instruments*UMI) in 1986; UMI became part of Steinway in 2000 and was moved to Conn-Selmer in 2003, production finally ended in 2005.
