Courtois 156NR 4 Valve Flugel Horn

The Antoine Courtois 156NR 4 Valve Flugel Horn offers players a full, dark sound with rich colours through its authentic French design and influences. This model features an extra-large 7.68″ bell and is played by Courtois artist Sergei Nakariakov.

With its small bore, large bell, and 4 valve design, the model 156NR flugelhorn has the perfect depth and capacity in the lower register, which is very helpful as both a soloist and ensemble player. The 4th valve extends the chromatic range of  the 156NR to pedal C and beyond. This is a great instrument for trumpeters who wish to explore French horn or even ‘cello repertoire, or to cover lower parts in ensemble settings.

Antoine Courtois employs incredible quality and experience of brass instrument making with over 200 years of history in manufacturing.

Courtois

Originally started by his father in 1789, Antoine Courtois (1770-1855) moved his workshops to 21 rue du Caire in 1803. Included among his instruments of this era were semi circular trumpets sounding similar to the horn, slide trombones, flugelhorns with keys, horns and a few ophicleides.

By the 1850s Courtois were working with Jean-Baptiste Arban  and in 1878 the Antoine Courtois business won the gold medal at the Universal exhibition in Paris for the quality of their instruments “of an excellent workmanship and impeccable accuracy.

Today Courtois produce the finest quality flugels, trombones and saxhorns.
