Piccolo Trumpets are the smallest of the trumpet family, pitched one octave higher than the standard Bb trumpet. The tubing in the Bb piccolo trumpet is one-half the length of that in a standard Bb trumpet.
Piccolo trumpets are usually built to play in either Bb or A, using a separate leadpipe for each key. Most piccolos have 4 valves to extend the usable range making low concert D playable, another solution to this is to have 3 piston valves and a rotor in the 3rd valve slide usually adding an extra tone to the bottom of the range.
Piccolo trumpets in G, F, and even high C are also manufactured, but are less common.
