Curved Head Flutes are ideal for young players for whom a full size flute would be too long. Stretching to play a full size flute can lead to discomfort and poor playing posture so using this type of headjoint is often the best solution.

Some, such the the Elkhart Apprentice have reduced key work to make them even more manageable for smaller players. Others, like the Yamaha YFL-212U and Trevor James 10X have both curved and straight heads so there is no need to buy a new flute as the player grows, just swap the head when the time comes.
